Your Modeling Career
Debbie Press likes America’s Next Top Model. The former Ford model relishes the moments of excitement and glamour that the show brings back to her. Yet her real focus is not on who will win in the end, but on the thousands of woman who never made it into the finalist slots. Will they give up their dream of modeling, or will they double their efforts?
Debbie Press is the author of Your Modeling Career, a book that aims to help aspiring models build trust and self-esteem and be strategic about their career dreams. Now in its second edition, her book seeks to inform women about the choices that are open to them beyond the runway and glossy TV ads, and help them develop a unique and saleable style.
“Models do not need to be classic beauties with perfect bodies in order to get work. There are venues and markets that provide work for models of all shapes and sizes. In fact, models in specialty categories often enjoy longer careers than high-fashion, editorial types, who are subject to trends and heavier competition,” the author comments.
One of the most important habits that Debbie Press encourages in emerging models is to “smarten up.” From studying fashion design, trends, designers, photographers, and other top models to reading magazines, e-zines, and newspapers (and not just the Sunday Styles), education is key to succeeding in the opinion-driven beauty business. Being well-read also helps a model develop a realistic sense of her market value, work more efficiently with the creative and business people she is dealing with, and prepare her next career move.
Press leaves no doubt that a modeling career typically lasts only several years—a small percentage of a woman’s total working life. In a special chapter entitled “ Careers in Fashion and Related Industries,” she addresses the various opportunities open to women who want to quit modeling for various reasons but keep working in the beauty or celebrity business.
